The Senior Software Engineer is responsible for understanding requirements, designing, implementing, unit testing and documenting software systems
They will take responsibility for understanding requirements, designing, implementing, unit testing and documenting software systems on time and to budget that conform to our coding, architectural, quality and project reporting guidelines on an internal or a customer facing project and the ongoing maintenance and support of such systems.

Main accountabilities
- Takes responsibility for the delivery of major product features and will identify and resolve all key technical issues relating to an entire product and report progress to project management. May be involved in the development of new prototype technology.
- Analyses and validates requirements, and where necessary negotiates scope with internal (e.g. Product Management) or external customers / collaborators.
- Codes, develops unit tests, debugs, documents, implements and maintains portions of software in the medical imaging domain. Exercise judgment on the appropriate level of code changes for each particular task in relation to timescales and risks.
- Develops software solutions that satisfy agreed functional and non-functional requirements, whilst promoting good engineering principles.
- Participates in the estimation of new development tasks whilst adhering to existing software design, implementation, testing, documentation and quality control processes.
- Promotes good design principles such as code reuse, modularity and extensibility and mentors others in these principles.
- May involve translating research discoveries into useable technology products and participation in creation of IDFs or patent applications.
- Specifies and maintains build environments, tools etc.
The post holder may be reasonably required to perform other duties, tasks and/or responsibilities from time to time.
Required education, skills and experience
Knowledge and skills
Essential
- An excellent academic record, including an honours degree qualification in Computing or a related discipline or suitable relevant experience.
- In-depth knowledge of relevant programming languages. This may include C++, C# or Java.
- An understanding of the factors affecting software performance, and the ability to design and write code that is maintainable, extensible and efficient.
Desirable
- Knowledge of low-level systems behaviour, such as memory management schemes, garbage collection schemes, etc.
- Knowledge of medical domain
- Maths knowledge including 3D geometry and vector maths
Experience
Essential
- Considerable experience as a software engineer in a scientific or technical environment
- Experience of .NET/C#/Java/Python/Perl/Win32/COM
- Substantial experience in the design and the delivery of major products or product features
- Experience involving requirements definition with significant customer communication
- Evidence of having successfully made technical decisions for projects that delivered products or product features in time, to budget and to specification, in such a way that they continue to be maintainable and extensible
Desirable
- Experience in working with agile project management methodologies (such as Scrum) and modern software engineering techniques (such as extreme programming, iterative development, pair programming and unit testing)
- Experience of working day to day with a customer
- Proven ability to mentor and develop staff
