The R&D centre of excellence for software development for Toshiba Medical is based in Edinburgh. We create technology that makes a meaningful difference to people’s lives, helping doctors to help their patients restore their health and well-being.

We are now looking for a Toolsmith: a software engineer assigned to our tools team. This team handles the tools that help us develop, test, debug and release software quickly. It also gives some support for the tools we use to run our corporate business processes. The team works by partnering with our IT team, engineering teams and process owners and collaborating on common problems. To date this team has been based around part-time assignments of engineers on secondment but we want to build a dedicated core, beginning with a single full-time engineer.

You will already have good experience of commercial software development and have an interest in how software development itself works. You will have a good understanding of how the development process is constructed and automated and a good feel for identifying repeatable work steps and when it is or is not useful to save time with automation. Ideally you have already created new tools and applied existing ones to improve the development process. Experience of medical imaging is an advantage but it’s by no means a pre-requisite. Also, knowledge of developing in a regulatory environment such as ISO13485 is directly useful to understand some of the constraints on how we work.

You will be capable of being a self-contained worker; good communicator and collaborator; quick to make relationships with a wide range of colleagues; and happy to coach and instruct others, while also learning from them.

You will be a bit of a magpie, collecting lots of interesting knowledge of tools and development technology and you will have a real appetite for exploring development ecosystems.   The list of relevant specific knowledge is of course huge! C++, C#, Java, Perl, Python, Ruby, JavaScript, VBA scripting, Ansible. AWS, VMWare, HyperV, Windows, TestComplete, Ranorex, Jasmine, Selenium, SpecFlow, Sharepoint, MediaWiki, Redmine, Jenkins, Atlassion suite, Gradle, Artifactory, Git Mercurial, svn, VisualStudio, IntelliJ, Webstorm. That’s just scratching the surface. Of course, you don't need to know all that stuff from day one, but you will be exposed to this breadth of different technologies pretty routinely.

A knowledge and interest in modern IT infrastructure for development and operations is useful too – physical, virtualised, and cloud – as you will spend a good deal of time partnering with our IT team on infrastructure implementation.

Our success entirely depends on our people and we really care about them. We are about 100 now in Edinburgh. We still have the identity and character of a small start-up but we are also part of a big global family in Toshiba Medical and we have their resources and support to draw on. We provide a great environment to develop your career. We add value through innovation and technical excellence, and all staff are encouraged and given time to learn new skills and pursue creative projects.

If you can help us to make how we work better, so that we can develop our high-quality products more efficiently and quickly, then we’d love to hear from you.
